How To Fold A Napkin

In this article, we’re gonna learn how to do some simple napkin folding easily. So, we will cover all these three folding ways:

The Buffet Fold

The Envelope Fold

The Candle Fold

The one thing, I do recommend that you do is, iron your napkins before you attempt to do that, makes for a nice finished product when you do that, a little bit easier to work with. The other suggestion that I have for you is, try to obtain square napkins. You could use 18 by 18-inch, 20 by 20-inch, or 24 by 24-inch square napkins.

No 01: The Buffet Fold

The buffet fold is a good one to use for table service, what you want to do is make sure that your napkin’s right side is down, facing the table, the seams are up and then you’re going to take the bottom edge that’s closest to you. You’re going to fold it up in half to meet the top edge and if you’ve got a utensil like the back of a spoon, the back of a butter knife, you can roll that along the edge to help fold that crease, make a nice creased line there.

Now, you want to take the left edge and then fold it over to meet the right edge. So, that all four corners are in the upper right-hand corner away from you and then you’re going to want to take the first layer and fold it to the center of the napkin, and then you want to fold it down one more time so that the first layer of fabric is in half and a half there on the edge as well.

Then, you’re going to take the second layer of fabric of the napkin, and then you’re going to fold it over and tuck it under the first layer and then fold it over one more time so that you have two nice diagonal lines and again you can take the back of a knife, the back of a spoon, kind of fold that along there to create a nice crease line and then very carefully, you’re going to flip this over to get to the back of it and you’re going to take the two edges and you’re going to fold it so that the two edges will meet in the center.

You can fold the bottom edge up to meet as well in the center area and then you would flip it back over and you can see there that you have a lovely little pocket that you can set up your guess table service, fork knife, and spoon inside of that pocket that’s created, that’s the banquet fold.

No 02: The Envelope Fold

The envelope fold is very nice, if you have table settings for the little name cards that you’d like to set out, perhaps, you have a dinner menu for what you’re going to be serving, so it makes a really interesting presentation for that type of thing.

You want to make sure that the face, the right side of your napkin is down, the seams are up and you’re going to take the one corner. Now, you’re going to take your right-hand corner and move it diagonally fold it in half, so it meets the upper left hand. Once you’ve folded the napkin in half diagonally, then you’re going to rotate this so that the folded edge is closest to you and then along the bottom edge you’re going to find the center point which would be right there, and you’re going to take the left edge and move it to the center and you’re going to take the right edge of the napkin and move it into the center so that the two edges meet there at the center point.

After that, you’re going to take those edges again and fold them into the center point, so in the left edge there to the center point and the right edge over there to the center point and then the bottom edge that’s closest to you, you’re going to fold upward to where those fold lines are. So, you’ve made yourself a little envelope, you could slide that table setting card in there, the menu card in there or you could close the envelope if you so desired.

No 03: The Candle Fold

The candle fold can be an interesting conversation piece at your dining room table. Again, what you want to do is start with your napkin the face side down, seam edge up and this time you’re going to want to rotate it so that it is in a diamond shape in front of you.

You’re going to want to take the point that is closest to you and fold it up to meet the point at the top. Once, you’ve folded the napkin in half diagonally, press the bottom fold line down, you’re going to want to take those two edges at the top and you’re going to fold it one-third of the way down, press the edge down. Now, you’re going to fold it again, one-third of the way down, fold it, press the folds out, and then one more time you’re going to take this top edge to meet the bottom edge and fold it out and you’ve got a very long skinny napkin with two points.

The point that is over on the left end you’re going to want to pick up and fold it up so that the point is facing away from you and then you are going to rotate this again with the point that you have just folded up and it’s now closest to you. You’re going to start rolling this is actually going to be the flame of your candle and you will roll along the length of the napkin and when you get to the end, you’re going to want to take the other pointed end of the napkin and you’re going to tuck that up and into the bottom of your candle, you can set that up. That’s it, there is your three basic napkin folds.
